SKU Pack Is Born

I have spoken a lot about how I love the waste industry. In one way or another, I’ve been involved with waste and recycling for most of my adult life. In-fact, over a 20-year career, I’ve seen the waste sector from all angles; As a waste producer, a waste processor and, of course, a waste broker. You could say, I’ve been around the block a few times.
Here’s what I’ve learnt: For the most part, we’re all trying to do our best, recycle what we can and make the world a better place – and I can support this with some hard facts.
According to a report released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in 2020:
  • 70.0% of UK packaging waste was either recycled or recovered in 2017 – this is 10% higher than the EU target
  • Commercial and industrial (C&I) waste has dropped from 41.1 million tonnes in 2016 to 37.2 million tonnes in 2018
  • The amount of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) sent to landfill has dropped from 7.4 million tonnes in 2017 to 7.2 million tonnes in 2018
Good report, right? Well, I would actually say it’s bittersweet. If you skim through the headline facts, the UK’s recycling numbers have only increase by 3% in 10 years. In fact, we’ve actually seen a 0.5% decrease in recycling figures from households over the last few years.
To summarise, everyone needs to do more and that includes us here at Mercorr.
Mercorr is now in its 4th year. Here’s a re-cap of what we’ve been up to in that time.

Open for Business:

We founded Mercorr in 2017 with a view of developing applications to deliver innovation to anyone and everyone in the waste industry. And, without one blowing smoke up one’s Derriere - we’re smashing it!

Our First Born:

Mercorr Analytics Platform (MAP) was launched in the summer of 2018. MAP is a web application designed to support the food waste sector, where our clients can use MAP to quickly identify the location, availability and value of feedstock in the UK.
This is powerful stuff when if you’re looking to build an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, especially given that AD plants are regarded as the best environmental outcome for unavoidable food waste. MAP is great for developers when trying to identify the best build site for new AD plants. Furthermore, AD operators use MAP to secure locally sourced food waste contracts.

The Middle (favourite) Child:

Mercorr Connect (MC) was launched in 2020, 18 months after MAP. MC is a web application that allows any company that creates, transports or processes waste to connect with one another online to digitise all waste processes; kind of like the swiss army knife of waste management. Let me explain…
Companies that produce waste – we call them ‘Creators’ because it sounds better - subscribe to MC, build their company profile and then populate information about the type of waste they produce, allowing them to then create a waste auction. We’re talking eBay but much, much better. For you, obviously, but mainly for the environment(!)
Companies that want that waste – the ‘Processors’ - are then invited to provide a single sealed bid against that waste auction. MC will then consolidate all sealed bids to allow the Creator of the waste to select a bid that meets all of their requirements. From this point onwards, everything – and we mean everything - is digitised!
Both MAP and MC bring bucket loads of value to the waste industry. They are designed to digitise waste processes and drag us ‘Wasties’ into the 21st century. However, they both have an Achilles heel: neither MAP or MC help to reduce waste.
Which brings me onto the latest in a long line of digital waste management solutions - SKU Pack!
“The best way to manage waste is to not produce waste in the first place.”

Unplanned 3rd Child:

Remember when I mentioned how AD is the best environmental outcome for unavoidable food waste? Well, it is all too common for food manufacturers to over produce certain food products. Furthermore, food products can sometimes be produced that contain incorrect ingredients or have been labelled incorrectly. Both examples lead to surplus stock; this takes up valuable space in warehouses and can be very difficult to sell. Guess what? It’s not so farfetched to say that a lot of these food products are written off and disposed of.
SKU Pack is an online marketplace for surplus and off-spec food products. We built SKU Pack to help food manufacturers to:
  • Reduce the amount of food waste that it unnecessarily wasted
  • Digitise and simplify the sale of surplus stock
  • Generate a revenue from surplus stock
Now don’t panic - your surplus stock will not be sold to any Tom, Dick, or Harry. You control who can buy your products by inviting your approved buyers to your own personal, online network.
So, there we have it. SKU Pack is officially launched and has become part of the Mercorr family and we couldn’t be happier.
And, the best part is that SKU Pack is completely FREE to join. You can sign up here.
Are you sold? We’re not surprised.
You can contact us here is you have any questions about any of our products and services.
